LLEGA LA GRAN ESTAFA AMERICANA

Tras mi post sobre "El Lobo de Wall Street" (cinta que, por cierto, ha sido censurada en varios países asiáticos por su contenido subido de tono), y con los premios Grammy todavía en la retina (con actuaciones estelares como la mitad de los Beatles o el explosivo dúo compuesto por el matrimonio Beyonce-JayZ), hoy os cuento más sobre otro de los films que está arrasando en las entregas de premios y que se estrena este viernes 31.

 

Further to my "The Wolf of Wall Street"'s post (movie which, by the way, has been censored in different Asian countries due to its lewd content), and with Grammys Awards ceremony recently held (which included stellar performances by half of The Beatles and the explosive matrimony duet Beyonce-JayZ), today I am going to tell you more about another movie that is having great success among the film festivals and which release takes place next Friday 31st.

"American Hustle" sigue en la carrera hacia los Oscar, con varias nominaciones entre sus filas: Mejor Película, Actor Principal (Christian Bale), Actriz Principal (Amy Adams), Actor de Reparto (Bradley Cooper), Actriz de Reparto (Jennifer Lawrence), Mejor Dirección (David O. Russell) y Mejor Guión original (Eric Warren Singer y David O. Russell).

 

"American Hustle" is in the road to the Oscar, with numerous nominations: Best Film, Best Actor in a Leading role (Christian Bale), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Amy Adams), Best Actor in a Supporting role (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Directing (David O. Russell) and Best original Screenplay (Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell).

 

El film cuenta la historia de un timador brillante, Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), y su astuta amante y socia Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) que se ven obligados a colaborar con un agente del FBI algo tosco, interpretado por el gran Bradley Cooper, para poder salvarse.

 

The film tells us the story about a brilliant con, Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), and his cunning lover and partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) which are forced to work with a wild FBI agent, played by Bradley Cooper, to save himself.

 

La mujer de Rosenfeld, interpretada por Jennifer Lawrence, llevará la situación al límite y hará peligrar todo el asunto. Completa el cast Jeremy Renner (el nuevo Jason Bourne o el dolor de cabeza de Tom Cruise en "Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol").

 

Rosenfeld's wife, role played by Jennifer Lawrence, will bring the situation up to the limit and will bring the world crashing down. The cast is completed by Jeremy Renner (the new Jason Bourne or Tom Cruise's headache at "Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol").

Su director, David O. Russell, recogió hace unos días el reconocimiento del Sindicato de Directores de América (aunque no el premio a Mejor Dirección, que se llevó Alfonso Cuarón por "Gravity"), y también recordamos los galardones que cosechó en el certamen de entrega de los Globos de Oro (Mejor Film Comedia o Musical, Mejor Actriz principal en Comedia o Musical -Amy Adams- y Mejor Actriz de Reparto en Comedia o Musical -Jennifer Lawrence-) además de varias nominaciones también en dicho festival a las categorías principales.

 

The director, David O. Russell, was given a recognition some days ago by the Directors Guild of America (not the award to Best Directing, which was addressed to Alfonso Cuarón by "Gravity"), and we also must remember the Golden Globes awards that gained some weeks ago (Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best  Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical for Amy Adams, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Pitcure for Jennifer Lawrence) as well as other nominations in the main categories.

   

Y es que si los premios y la crítica avalan esta película (el Círculo de Críticos de Cine de Nueva York la eligió mejor película del año), también lo hace el público, que se muestra encantado con esta cinta de estética retro de la América de los 70. Inspirada en una operación policial verídica, conocida como Abscam, que permitió a la policía estadounidense destapar una trama de corrupción política, lo cierto es que a cada paso que da gana adeptos y detractores por igual. Pero sin duda será una de las grandes favoritas al Oscar este año.

 

And the point is that awards and critics support the movie (was chosen as Best Year's film by the New York Film Critics Circle), also has been approved by the audience, which looks to be pleased with this American-70's-retro film. The movie, based on a true police operation story, known as "Abscam" -which allowed american police to reveal one of the most famous politic corruption cases-, is each day gaining both followers and detractors. But with no doubt thjs will be one of this year's Oscar-favourite films.

EL LOBO DICAPRIO

Como decía en el de la semana pasada, dedicaré los próximos posts a los proyectos del 2013 que se prevé serán los más laureados este año.

As I announced last week, I will dedicate my next posts to 2013's projects, which probably will be the most awarded ones this year.

En pleno florecimiento de entregas de premios (premios del Sindicato de Actores, Festival de Sundance, Goya, etc.), empezamos por uno de los films más asombrosos y especiales de los últimos años, "The Wolf of Wall Street" (traducida literalmente como "El Lobo de Wall Street"), que acudí a ver el pasado sábado, al día siguiente de su estreno.

In a moment in which cinema festivals show up all around (SAG awards, Sundance Film Festival, Goya, etc.), I start with one of the most special and astonishing films of the recent years, "The Wolf of Wall Street", which I watched last saturday, one night after his release.

La cinta ha sido dirigida por Martin Scorsese ("El color del dinero" o "Infiltrados", entre muchas otras), con guión de Terence Winter sobre el libro e historia de Jordan Belfort, un broker que fue encarcelado durante unos 2 años por fraude -manipulación del mercado bursátil y venta de acciones a centavo a través de una empresa fraudulenta- pero que sin embargo ha terminado inspirando esta película y hasta dando conferencias al público.

The film has been directed by Martin Scorsese ("The color of money" or "The Departed", among others), with screenplay by Terence Winter about the book and story of Jordan Belfort, a broker who was convicted of fraud crimes -stock market manipulation and selling penny stock values- but that nevertheless has finally inspired this film and even giving speeches.

El gran Leonardo DiCaprio ("Infiltrados", "Gangs of New York"), actor fetiche del director de "Casino", encarna a Belfort, el verdadero protagonista del film -excesos aparte-, una sátira del género comedia negra que desgrana temas tan oscuros como la codicia, la avaricia y la atracción del poder.

The great Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Departed", "Gangs of New York"), fetish actor of "Casino"'s director, brings the main character -Belfort- to life, in a satire and dark comedy about dark topics such as greed, avarice and power's attraction.




Belfort (DiCaprio) de comida con Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey), el broker que inicia al primero en el mundo bursátil, y aunque su "relación" es corta, le enseñará lo suficiente para ser un auténtico tiburón de Wall Street.
Belfort (DiCaprio) has lunch with Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey), the broker who starts Belfort in the stock Exchange market, and even their 'relationship' is short, Hanna will give to the former advice enough in order to be an authentic Wall Street's shark.  

Tal y como contaba el propio DiCaprio en una entrevista concedida a la prensa, se trata de un film que recoge una época de la vida de Belfort en la que caía en todas las tentaciones, yendo más allá de cualquier límite y motivado por la codicia, un reflejo de tantas otras historias de éxitos y fracasos de Wall Street y el Primer Mundo en general. Para Scorsese, lo importante no era que el público presenciara la derrota, la caída de un símbolo (como una especie de "Imperio Romano"), sino que viera cómo ese estilo de vida intoxicaba a la gente, incluso a la sensata.

As DiCaprio declared to the press, it's a film about a time period of Belfort's life when he gaven to every tempation possible, taking the boundaries and motivated by greed, a reflect of many other stories of success and failures in Wall Street and the First World generally speaking. For Scorsese, the point was to let the audience see how intoxicating this lifestyle was for people even reasonable ones, and not to see failure (as the fall of the Roman Empire).  

El proyecto permitió a todo el equipo explorar la naturaleza más oscura del ser humano, ver la esencia de todos los aspectos del ser humano; algo que, en palabras de DiCaprio, solo Scorsese podía captar, y por ello el protagonista de "Titanic" le esperó seis años para poder llevarlo a la gran pantalla. Todo ello, un director de Oscar y una historia que invitaba al desmadre, dejó mucho espacio para la improvisación; los actores disfrutaron y rieron en el rodaje como en ningún otro, porque no había normas.

The project allowed all the cast exploring the darkest nature of the human being, to see the essence of many aspects of human nature; something that, as DiCaprio said, only Scorsese could capture, and for that reason the star from "Titanic" waited for 6 years to bring this story to the theaters together with him. All that, an Oscar winner director and a story which invited to 'raves', allowed the cast to improvisation; actors enjoyed and laughed as never before during the filming, as there were no rules. 

El propio Belfort pasó mucho tiempo junto al equipo colaborando en la creación del personaje (e incluso el 'exbroker' se atrevió haciendo un 'cameo' en los últimos minutos de la cinta).

Belfort himself was a part to creating his character, and spent a lot of time with the team (the exbroker even dared appearing at the end of the movie).

Un film recargado con aires de "The Great Gatsby" (en el que repetía DiCaprio como un joven derrochador y enamorado), y con ese romanticismo del Nueva York de hace unas pocas décadas, se trata de una obra maestra de Scorsese, que no tanto atrae por la trama sino por la estética y el trasfondo (a)moral, con  momentos para todo, desde los más cómicos y surrealistas hasta las dosis de realismo sin tapujos.

An excessively ornate film with a "The Great Gastby"'s look (in which DiCaprio repeated as a young in-love spendaholic guy), and with the romanticism of some-decades-ago New York, it's a Scorsese's master work, which is not very attractive by the plot itself but for the aesthetics and the (non)ethical backgroung, with comic and surreal moments but with some doses of openly-reality.

Lo mejor: la escena en la que DiCaprio, bajo los efectos de una fuerte droga, debe arrastrarse por los suelos, literalmente, para conservar su modus vivendi.

The best: the scene in which DiCaprio, under the effects of an almost-killing drug, must literally drag himself in order to maintain his modus vivendi.

Lo peor: que da la sensación de déjà-vu una y otra vez... y los excesivos desnudos, no dejando lugar a la imaginación.

The worst: that there are so many déjà-vu over and over again... and there are too much nudes, leaving no room for imagination. 

El cast lo completan pesos pesados: Matthew McConaughey (ahora en "Buyers Dallas Club" y antes en "El inocente"); Jonah Hill como Donnie, la mano derecha de Belfort (que está de Oscar también); Margot Robbie como la atractiva y provocativa Naomi (vista sobretodo en televisión, como en "Pan Am"); Cristin Milioti como Teresa, la mujer del Lobo (-atención amantes de la serie "Cómo conocí a vuestra madre" que no conozcáis el final- es conocida por ser la famosa "madre" de la televisiva "How I met your mother"); Kyle Chandler como el Agente Denham; Jean Dujardin (como el banquero suizo); Rob Reiner ("Algo para recordar") como el responsable padre de Belfort; y Jon Bernthal (visto en "The Walking Dead"); entre muchos otros.

 

The cast is completed by great actors: Matthew McConaughey (now in "Buyers Dallas Club" and formerly at "The Lincoln Lawyer"); Jonah Hill as Belfort's right hand, Donnie (whose performance also deserves the Oscar); Margot Robbie as the spectacular Naomi (seen mostly in TV such as "Pan Am"); Cristin Milioti as Teresa, Wolf's wife (warning for 'How I met your mother' fans: she is known for her role as the famous "mother" of the so-called TV series); Kyle Chandler as Special Agent Denham; Jean Dujardin (as the Swiss bank agent); Rob Reiner ("Sleepless in Seattle") as the responsible Belfort's father; and Jon Bernthal (seen in "The Walking Dead"); among others.

La gala tendrá lugar el 2 de marzo -algo muy inusual ya que siempre es en febrero, pero por fechas coincide así- con Ellen DeGeneres como maestra de ceremonias, y tal y como anunció la Academia de Hollywood hace un par de días, esta 86a edición estará dedicada a los héroes, siendo la temática de la misma.

The ceremony will take place on March 2 -something not usual as it is always in february, but this year's calendar has caused it this way- hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. The subject of this 86th edition will be heroes, as indicated by the Academy itself some days ago.

71 NOCHES DE GLOBOS DE ORO

Anteayer se celebraba la 71a edición de los Golden Globe Awards que cada año entrega la Asociación de Prensa Extranjera de Hollywood, y la verdad es que hubo de todo y para todos.

 

Sunday took place the 71st Golden Globe Awards ceremony by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and actually there were everything.

 

Talento, glamour y hasta pasión se dieron cita en los cerca de 30.000 m2 de alfombra roja del Beverly Hilton Hotel de Los Angeles. Por la espectacular alfombra roja se pasearon los principales actores, directores, guionistas,... tanto del cine como de la televisión (un género cada vez más en auge). Y no defraudó.

 

Talent, glam and even passion met at the 30.000 m2 of red carpet from the Beverly Hilton Hotel at Los Angeles. Actors, directors, writers,.. from both television (which each time is gaining more recognition) and cinema walked through an amazing red carpet; and this one did not disappoint.

 

Las actrices lucían diseños de lo más variados, desde los que quitan el hipo (como Amy Adams con un espectacular Valentino con un escote en V a la que ella misma se refirió como "demasiado sexy para los Globos de Oro") a los más sobrios pero de magnífica elegancia (como los de Julianna Marguiles -vestido largo negro con bordados dorados en los bajos- o Julia Roberts -con un exquisito Dolce&Gabanna palabra de honor negro con cuerpo camisero blanco-).

 

Actresses wore all kind of designs, some of them breathtaking (as Amy Adams with an spectacular Valentino which she described as "too much sexy for a Golden Globes Festival") and other ones with an extreme and sober elegance (such as Julianna Marguiles' -a long black dress with golden embroideries at the feet- or Julia Roberts' -with an exquisite shoulder black dress Dolce&Gabanna with white t-shirt bodice-).

UN NUEVO AÑO DE CINE

El año 2014 ha empezado repleto de entregas de premios y galardones para los numerosos proyectos que van llegando. 

 

2014 has come full of prizes and awards corresponding to the projects arriving these months.

 

Hace unos días tenía lugar la 79ª edición de los New York Film Critics Circle Awards. El protagonismo era entonces para "American Hustle", film dirigido por David O. Rusell; la cinta recogía varios galardones, entre ellos el de Mejor Película y Mejor Actriz Secundaria para Jennifer Lawrence.

 

A few days ago the 79th New York Film Critics Circle Awards took place. The spotlight was clearly in "American Hustle", film directed by David O. Rusell; the movie was awarded with different prizes, such as Best Film and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence.

 

Otros films que acapararon miradas y reconocimientos fueron "12 años de esclavitud", cuyo Premio a la Mejor Dirección recogió Steve McQueen (también  nominado a la mejor dirección en los Premios del Sindicato de Directores); "Blue Jasmine", que dio el premio a la Mejor Actriz a Cate Blanchett, o "Cuando todo está perdido".

 

Other films which were also awarded and attracted attention were "12 years a slaver", worthing Steve McQueen the Best Director award (he has also been nominated in such category in Directors Guild of America Awards); "Blue Jasmine", which gained Best Actress' award for Cate Blanchett, or "All is Lost".

 

El certamen de la ciudad neoyorquina supuso una decepción para lo nuevo de los hermanos Coen, "A propósito de Llewyn Davis", que, contra todo pronóstico, solo se llevó el galardón a la Mejor Fotografía.

The 'new yorker' festival become disappointing for Coen brothers, whose "Inside Llewyn Davis" only got the Best Photography award against all odds.

 

Por otro lado, estos días se celebra la 25ª edición del Palm Springs International Film Festival en la ciudad californiana.

On the other hand, these days is taking place the 25th Palm Springs International Film Festival.

El glamour, los encuentros entre colegas, los pases y los galardones se dan cita a diario en el festival.

Glam, meetings between fellows, previews and awards are being the main points of the Festival. 

 

Entre otras grandes del mundo del séptimo arte, una elegante Julia Roberts se llevó el premio Spotlights por su papel en "August: Osage County"; Sandra Bullock recogió el Premio por su gran interpretación en "Gravity"; y Meryl Streep fue galardonada con el Premio Icono a toda su carrera.

Among other big stars from the seventh art, a graceful Julia Roberts got the Spotlights award for her role in "August: Osage County"; Sandra Bullock gathered the award for her great play in "Gravity"; and Meryl Streep received the Icon award to her entire career.

En el sector masculino, Tom Hanks obtuvo el Premio del Presidente por sus interpretaciones en "Capitán Phillips" y "Saving Mr.Banks".

In the masculine side, Tom Hanks got the award from the President for his roles in "Captain Phillips" and "Saving Mr. Banks".

Estos fueron algunos de los reconocimientos. Pero sin duda la triunfadora de la noche fue de nuevo "American Hustle" (traducida para nuestras salas como "La gran estafa americana") que se llevó el premio Ensamble Performance, y cuyos protagonistas, como Bradley Cooper, fueron premiados por su interpretación en la misma.

These were some of the prizes delivered in Palm Springs. But certainly the top winner of the night was again "American Hustle" (translated as "La gran estafa americana" for Spanish cinemas) which obtained the Ensamble Performance award, and which actors, as Bradley Cooper, were awarded for their interpretations.

La cinta también ha cosechado sendas nominaciones en la categoría de Mejor Film tanto en los Golden Globe Awards, cuya gala tendrá lugar el próximo día 12 de enero, y para los BAFTA que concede la academia británica.

The referred movie has also been nominated as Best Film both in Golden Globe Awards (which premier will take place on January, 12) and the British academy's BAFTA.
