TIC TAC TIC TAC... LLEGA EL TÍO OSCAR

 

La cuenta atrás ha empezado. Este domingo día 3 es el día O: se entregan los Premios de la Academia, los Oscar, y mientras en el Dolby Theatre de Los Angeles (en la imagen) se ultiman los preparativos de la ceremonia de esta 86a entrega, nos siguen llegando películas que optan a estos y otros premios.  

 

The count down has started. Next sunday 3 is the O-day: the Academy Awards' ceremony -the Oscar- will be taking place, and until then the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles (in the picture below) is full of workers arranging all the details (red carpet, scenery, etc.) for this 86th ceremony. In the meantime new films -candidate for these and other awards- are being released.  

 

 

 

 

 

Si la semana pasada se estrenaban grandes cintas como "Her" (con Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson y Olivia Wilde en su reparto), de la que dicen es una de las mejores historias contadas en el cine, y una de las claras favoritas a los Oscar, y el nuevo proyecto de George Clooney como director, "The Monuments Men" (basada en una hechos reales sucedidos en plena II Guerra Mundial -cómo un grupo de personas intenta salvar de las llamas y del espolio nazi el patrimonio artístico de la humanidad, como forma de intentar salvar a ésta-), este viernes llegan films de peso y que tendrán también protagonismo en la gala del domingo.

 

While last week great films were released, such as "Her" (with Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson and Olivia Wilde as the main cast), film which is said to be one of the best stories brought to the cinema, and a clear favourite for winning the Oscar, and the new play by George Clooney, "The monuments Men" (based on a true story within the IIWW -of how a group of people try to save all the art patrimony from the fire and Nazis' plundering as a way to save the whole human race itself-), this Friday new and important-to-be films arrive to our cinemas.

"Philomena", lo nuevo de Steven Frears, protagonizada por la talentosa Judi Dench, nos trae a nuestras pantallas una historia de amor, en la que una madre que se vio obligada a dar a su hijo en adopción emprende un viaje de búsqueda junto a un (amigo) periodista. Calificada por medios como conmovedora y estimulante, y una de las mejores obras de Frears.

 

 

 

 

"Philomena", the newest by Steven Frears and starring talented Judi Dench, brings us a story of how a mother who was forced to put her child up for adoption sets out on a journey to find her child together with a journalist (friend). Described by the media as moving and stimulating, and one of the best Frears' work ever.

 

Puro amor, ternura y un espíritu de superación se dan cita en esta película basada en  hechos reales que ya acumula cuatro nominaciones a los Oscar (por Mejor Película, Mejor Actriz Principal, Mejor Guión y Banda Sonora) además de tres nominaciones a los Globos de Oro, un BAFTA y otras tantas nominaciones y premios en varios festivales de todo el globo. Veremos qué consigue el domingo.

 

The film, characterized by the love, tenderness and the self-improvement spirit, is based on a true story, and has already been nominated for four Oscar Awards (Best Film, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Screenplay and Best Music) as well as for the Golden Globes in three categories, has won a BAFTA and other awards and nominations in different festivals accross the world. Sunday we will be able to see how many awards receives.

 

Hasta entonces, mientras esperamos nos irán llegando historias y curiosidades tanto de la gala y todo lo que la envuelve (como que el prestigioso chef Wolfgang Puck se encargará del menú a base de mezcla de sushi, frutas orgánicas y chocolates) como de los films que se presentan (por poner un ejemplo, acaba de saberse que los productores y distribuidores de "The Wolf of Wall Street" han sido demandados por una jugosa cuantía por Andre Greene -antiguo empleado de la firma de bolsa Stratton Oakmont y supuesta base del personaje del film conocido como "Rugrat", interpretado por P. J. Byrne- por caracterizarlo de forma injusta como delincuente drogadicto y degenerado, lo que le ha ocasionado problemas en su vida personal a la hora de encontrar trabajo).

 

Until then, we will have to wait for it, and in the meanwhile different curiosities and stories shall appear about both the ceremony (such as that the world-known chef Wolfgang Puck will serve sushi, organic fruits and chocolates) and the candidate films (it has been published that the producers and distributors of "The Wolf of Wall Street" has been suited by Andre Greene -former worker at the stock company Stratton Oakmont and supposed inspiration for the film's character known as Rugrat, played by P. J. Byrne-; he asks for a considerable compensation as he is characterized in the film unfairly as a criminal drug-addict and depraved, what has implied personal problems for him such as not finding a job).

BERLINALE, BAFTA Y OTROS...

Cuando faltan apenas dos semanas para la gala de los Premios de la Academia (recordad, el próximo 2 de marzo), las entregas de galardones siguen sucediéndose por todo el globo.

With the Academy Awards only two weeks away to take place (remember, next March 2), each prize-giving ceremonies gives place to another.

 

Esta semana pasada cerraba sus puertas el Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín (conocida como "la Berlinale"), en el que el cine asiático fue coronado como el gran vencedor (entre sus premios: el Oso de Oro fue para Diao Yinan -China- por "Black Coal, Thin Ice"; el Oso de Plata a la Mejor Actriz para Haru Kuroki por "The Little house"; y el de Mejor Actor para Liao Fan por "Black Coal, Thin Ice"), con permiso de dos grandes cineastas: Richard Linklater,-quien se llevó el Oso de Plata al Mejor Director por "Boyhood"- y Wes Anderson, que recogió el Gran Premio del jurado por su trabajo en "El Gran Hotel Budapest".

Last week the Berlin International Film Festival  (so-called "Berlinale") closed its doors, a festival where the Asian cinema was the big winner (among its awards: the Golden Bear for Diao Yinan -China- for "Black Coal, Thin Ice"; the Silver Bear as Best Actress for Haru Huroki for "The Little House"; and the Best Actor's for Liao Fan in "Black Coal,Thin Ice"), with the permission of two great directors: Richard Linklater -who was given the Silver Bear as Best Director for "Boyhood"- and Wes Anderson, who was awarded with the Great Prize of the jury for his work at "The Gran Hotel Budapest".

El festival contó con la presencia de actores de talla internacional, como George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray y John Goodman, quienes acudieron para presentar lo nuevo de Clooney, "The Monuments Men" (que se estrena el día 21 en nuestras salas); Viggo Mortensen en la première de su nuevo proyecto, "The two faces of January"; Christian Bale y Bradley Cooper, en promoción de "American Hustle" (que sigue como favorita en la carrera hacia los Oscar); o algunos miembros del reparto de "Nymphomaniac", lo último (como nuevo y también por polémico) de Lars Von Trier.

Numerous actors atended the Festival, such as George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman, who were there to present new Clooney's Project, "The Monuments Men" (to be released on February 21 in the Spanish theaters); Viggo Mortensen at the première of his new film, "The two faces of January"; Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper, who were promoting his latest work, "American Hustle" (which keeps on being favourite for the Oscar's); or some of the members of the crew of "Nymphomaniac", the newest and polemic movie by Lars Von Trier.

 

Y el pasado domingo tuvo lugar en la capital británica la 67ª edición de los Premios de la British Academy of Film and Television Arts (los BAFTA), con una alfombra roja de infarto y muchas sorpresas entre los premiados.

And last Sunday was held the 67th edition of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)  Awards, with a spectacular red carpet and great surprises among the prize-winners.
 

 

 

 

Unos impresionantes Angelina Jolie y Brad Pitt (dúo popularmente conocido como "Brangelina") a su llegada a la gala. Ella, con un look muy masculino firmado por YSL, y él con un estilo dandie con blacksuit de Valentino.

Algunos de los asistentes causaron verdadero furor, como Angelina Jolie y Brad Pitt (en la imagen) -que lucieron como nadie su belleza y poderío en el séptimo arte-, o el siempre elegante Leonardo DiCaprio, serio y de negro; también optaron por un total black look Amy Adams, Christian Bale y su mujer, Sisi Blazic; Martin Scorsese; Daniel Brühl o Cate Blanchett.

Some of the attendee were received with great enthusiasm, such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (at the picture) -who looked perfect and astonishing-, or the stylish-serious-in black Leonardo DiCaprio; others such as Amy Adams, Christian Bale and wife, Sisi Blazic, Martin Scorsese, Daniel Brühl and Cate Blanchett also trusted on a total black look for the show.  

No quisieron perderse el evento tampoco David O. Russell, que llegó acompañado uno de sus actores fetiche Bradley Cooper; Chiwetel Ejiofor; Tom Hanks y Rita Wilson; Helen Mirren; Oprah Winfrey o Emma Thompson.

Una noche repleta de glamour y talento, en el que la gran triunfadora fue "Gravity" (cinta que os recomendé AQUÍ), con seis galardones, entre ellos el de Mejor Película no británica, Mejor Director, Mejor Fotografía, Efectos Especiales, Sonido y Banda Sonora. Aunque solamente se llevó dos galardones en las categorías reinas, lo cierto es que Cuarón (que repite premio como Director) puede estar realmente satisfecho..

 

This was a glam and talented night, in which the big winner was "Gravity" (which I already recommended in a previous post), with six awards, among them Best non-British Film, Best Director, Photography, Special Effects, Sound and Original Song. Although it only obtained two awards in the main categories, Cuarón (who repeats as BEst Director) can be pleased..

Una emocionada Cate Blanchett dedicó su Premio a la Mejor Actriz por su papel en "Blue Jasmine" a su gran amigo, el desaparecido Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Los galardones a Mejor Actor de Reparto se lo llevaron a casa Barkhad Adbi  en la sección masculina por "Capitán Phillips" y Jennifer Lawrence la versión femenina por "American Hustle".

 

The awards regarding Best Actor in a Supporting Role were for Barkhad Adbi for "Captain Phillips" in the male section and Jennifer Lawrence gained the women section award for her role in "American Hustle".

ADIÓS PHILIP

Ayer nos dejaba un grande de la industria del cine: Philip Seymour Hoffman.

 

Yesterday a big star of the cinema passed away: Philip Seymour Hoffman.

 

El actor y director estadounidense fue encontrado sin vida en un apartamento de la ciudad de Nueva York (se especula sobre si era el suyo u otro cercano al mismo); según las primeras informaciones de la Policía, todo apunta a una sobredosis de heroína, vicio en el que habría recaído en 2013 tras 23 años sin consumir.

 

The american actor and director was found dead in an appartment at NYC (it is not yet confirmed whether was his' or another apartment); according to information provided by the NYPD, it seems that the reason could have been an heroin overdose, vice in which he felt back into last year after 23 years "clear". 

 

 

PSH se suma a la larga lista de estrellas de Hollywood que nos dejan a temprana edad y en la cumbre del éxito (Paul Walker, Heath Ledger, Brittany Murphy, etc.).

 

 

PHS is part of a large list of Hollywood stars who pass away at a young age and with a successful career (Paul Walker, Heath Ledger, Brittany Murphy, etc.). 

 

 

 

Dejando aparte las circunstancias de su muerte y otros escarceos de su vida (que estos días circularán por los medios y redes sociales), me centraré en sus trabajos como reconocimiento a su sólida carrera.

 

I will focus on his work as recognition of his solid acting-directing-career, regardless of the circumstances of his dead and other life issues (which shall be probably circulating all over the net and the social networks).

 

Nacido a finales de los 60 en Rochester (Nueva York), empezó su carrera en los 90 haciendo sus pinitos en la pequeña pantalla (en la serie "Ley y orden") y el cine independiente, en títulos como "Esencia de Mujer" (junto a Al Pacino y un jovencísimo Chris O'Donnell), "El despertar" o "Cuando un hombre ama a una mujer" (con Andy García y Meg Ryan en la que es una de las grandes cintas románticas -y una de mis favoritas- de todos los tiempos).

 

Born at the end of 60's at Rochester (New York), he started his career at the 90's with small roles on TV ("Law & Order") and the independent cinema, in titles such as "Scent of a Woman" (with Al Pacino and a very-young Chris O'Donnell), "The yearling" or "When a man loves a woman" (with Andy García and Meg Ryan in a movie which may be one of the best romantic movies -and one of my favourites- ever).

 

Pero fueron títulos como "Boogie Nights", "El Gran Lebowski", "Magnolia" o la blockbuster "Twister" los que consolidaron al actor como un peso pesado en la industria del séptimo arte a finales de los 90.

 

But it was with films like "Boogie Nights", "The great Lebowski", "Magnolia" or the blockbuster "Twister" which consolidate the actor as a cinema star at the end of the 90's.

 

Participó en todo tipo de proyectos: suspense ("El talento de Mr. Ripley", junto a un espeluznante Matt Damon, Jude Law y Gwyneth Paltrow; o "El dragón rojo", con Ralph Fiennes y Anthony Hopkins); drama ("Casi famosos", "Cold Mountain", "The Master", "Magnolia", entre otras); acción ("Mission: Impossible III", "Los juegos del hambre: En llamas", "Los idus de Marzo", etc.) aunque lo suyo eran las comedias ("Y entonces llegó ella", 2004; "De vuelta al insti", 2005; "Increíble pero falso", 2009).   

 

He was part of all kind of projects: intrigue ("The talented Mr. Ripley", together with a spine-chilling Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow; or "Red Dragon" with Ralph Fiennes and Anthony Hopkins); drama ("Almost Famous", "Cold Mountain", "The Master", "Magnolia", among others); action  ("Mission: Impossible III", "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire", "The idus of March", etc.) even though his passion was comedy ("Along came Polly", 2004; "Strangers with Candy", 2005; "The invention of Lying", 2009,...).

 

Pero sin duda el papel que más éxitos le reportó y que le valió su único Oscar y su Globo de Oro fue el del escritor de la novela "A sangre fría", en el film del mismo nombre, "Truman Capote", que contaba la historia de cómo el escritor establecía una relación con uno de los asesinos protagonistas de su obra -basada en hechos reales-, Perry Smith. 

 

But with no doubt his most successful and awarded role (which gained for him his Oscar and Golden Globe Award) was as the writer Truman Capote (in the film with the same name "Capote") who, during his research for his book In Cold Blood -an account of the murder of a Kansas family- develops a close relationship with Perry Smith, one of the killers.

Aunque en esa ocasión la Academia de Hollywood le entregaría la estatuilla por su interpretación como Actor Principal de dicho film, como secundario -su especialidad-, cosechó varias nominaciones a los Premios de la Academia (por "The Master", "La Duda", y "La Guerra de Charlie Wilson", los dos últimos en años consecutivos) y otros reconocimientos (un BAFTA por "Capote", cuatro nominaciones a los Globos de Oro, una nominación a los Premios Emmy, etc.).

 

Although that time the Hollywood Academy delivered him the Oscar for his performance in a Leading role, as an actor in a Supporting role -his especiality- obtained different nominations to the Oscar's ("The Master", "The doubt" and "Charlie's Wilson War", the latters in successive years) and other recognitions (a BAFTA for "Capote", four nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, a nomination for the Emmy Awards, etc.). 

 

Pero el actor no se conformaba con su estatus en Hollywood, por lo que quiso dar un paso más saltando a la dirección. Tras un intento fallido con su primer proyecto "Jack Goes Boating" (inédita en España), recientemente había anunciado su vuelta a la dirección con varios proyectos.

 

But the actor had not enough performing as actor in Hollywood, so he decided to go further and tried directing. After an unsuccessful attempt with "Jack Goes Boating" (not released in Spain), he had recently announced varios projects as director.
