CAMINO HACIA LOS OSCAR

Estos días de Fiestas van llegando a nuestras salas proyectos de gran envergadura.
 

New great projects are coming these "Christmish" days to our cinemas.
 

A los estrenos del pasado fin de semana como la polémica "Diana" -retrato de los últimos años de vida de la Princesa de Gales- y  la superproducción "The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug" (con muy buena acogida de público y críticas -incluyendo alabanzas de grandes del séptimo arte en las redes sociales-), el día de Navidad se han sumado otras cintas muy esperadas como "El médico" (la adaptación cinematográfica del best-seller de Noah Gordon), lo nuevo del siempre excéntrico Lars Von Trier "Nymphomaniac. Primera Parte" o la extraña "La vida secreta de Walter Mitty".

Further to the last weekend's releases such as the polemic "Diana" -portrait of the last years of the passed-away Princess of Wales- and the super-production "The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug" (which has actually had a warm welcome by the audience and critics -including praises coming from great professionals from the seventh art in social networks-), other expected films as "The Physician" (the film adaptation of the best-seller by Noah Gordon), the latest by the eccentric Lars Von Trier "Nymphomaniac. Volume I" or the rare "The Secret life of Walter Mitty" arrive also on Christmas' Day.

Esta última ha sido dirigida y protagonizada por Ben Stiller. Un film muy diferente a casi todo lo hecho hasta ahora, basado en un relato corto obra de James Thurber del año 1939 (del que ya se hizo una versión cinematográfica), en el que el protagonista, Walter Mitty, protagoniza cantidad de experiencias gracias a su prodigiosa imaginación, llenas de heroicidades, romanticismo y acción. Es una mezcla de comedia, acción y drama, con un mensaje muy claro: el del espíritu de superación y el valor como principios para poder vivir una vida plena (sin tener que decir aquello de "la vida es aquello que pasa mientras..."). Los toques de humor y los guiños a otras grandes obras (un "corre Walter corre" nos evoca claramente a Tom Hanks corriendo en "Forrest Gump", o a muchos de los clásicos de superhéroes) completan una cinta que no te esperas para nada, muy entretenida para una tarde navideña sin más pretensiones que hacer pasar un buen rato a los espectadores riendo e imaginando y, ya puestos, pensar "leyendo" entre líneas.

The last one has been directed by Ben Stiller, who also plays the leading role. It is a very different film from all what it has been produced before, based on a short story from 1939 by James Thurber (which was already adapted for the cinema); its main character, Walter Mitty, experiences many different heroic, romantic and full of action scenes thanks to a prodigious imagination. It is a mix of comedy, action and drama, with a clear message on it: that the desire for self-improvement, overcoming and the courage are the principles for having a worth-living life (avoiding to say the so-called "life is what happens while you ..."). The humorous points and the "winks" to other great works (a character yelling 'run Walter run' brings us to ming Tom Hanks runing on "Forrest Gump", or many other classic superheroes) fill up a movie which you do not expect at all, very entertaining for a Christmish afternoon, with no more pretensions than allowing audience to spending a good time, laughing and imaginating, and, why not, thinking.

Stiller, que cuenta con pesos pesados como Shirley MacLaine y Sean Penn entre el reparto, confiesa que "queríamos hacer una película que, como Forrest Gump en su momento, sería diferente, que no encajaría con las etiquetas acostumbradas. Eso es todo". Objetivo conseguido.

Stiller has luckily had the support of great actors among the cast, such as Shirley MacLaine and Sean Penn; the director admits that "we wanted to produce a movie which, as Forrest  Gump at that time, would be different, would not fit with the stereotypes. That's all". Goal achieved.

 

Estos son solo algunos de los films que compiten en la carrera hacia los Oscar, que empezó hace unos días con el anuncio de los candidatos a la 71ª edición de los Globos de Oro, la (dicen) antesala de los Premios de la Academia.

These are only a few movies on the road to the Oscar's, a "race" which started a few days ago with the anouncement of the nominees for the 71st Annual Golden Globes Awards, known as the prelude to the Academy Awards.

ESTRENOS NAVIDEÑOS: 12 AÑOS DE ESCLAVITUD

"12 years a slave" es el nuevo título sobre esclavitud que llega a nuestras pantallas este viernes día 13 de la mano del director Steve McQueen (responsable de "Shame", 2011).

"12 years a slave" is the new project about slavery by director Steve McQueen (responsible for "Shame", 2011) which arrives this friday 13 to our cinemas.
 

 

La cinta, enmarcada en el ambiente pre-bélico de la Guerra Civil de los Estados Unidos de América, cuenta la historia de Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), un afroamericano libre de Nueva York que es vendido como esclavo (para el esclavista y malvado señor que interpreta Michael Fassbender) y debe luchar por conservar no solo su vida sino también su dignidad.  

 

The "tape", framed within the antebellum United States of America, tells the story about Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from New York who is sold into slavery (for the slave owner played by Michael Fassbender) and must fight not only to stay alive but to retain his dignity.

Se trata de una historia basada en hechos reales, que debe su título a los 12 años de miseria y represión que atraviesa el protagonista, hasta que un abolicionista canadiense (Bass, al que da vida Brad Pitt) cambia el curso de su vida.

 

It is based on a true story, and the title refers to the twelfish years that the main character, Northup, lives through cruelty and misery, until a Canadian abolitionist (Bass, 'brought' to life by Brad Pitt) changes his destiny.  

 

 

Un proyecto que ya ha cosechado algunos premios y nominaciones (nominado a los Independent Spirit Awards en las categorías de Mejor Director, Mejor Guión, Mejor actor en papel principal, y Mejor actor y actriz de reparto, entre otros), con grandes productores entre sus filas (como el propio Brad Pitt) y dirigido por un cineasta novel aclamado por su trabajo (ganó el People's Choice Award al Mejor Director en la pasada edición del Toronto International Film Festival, y le valió una mención especial como Mejor Film en el Stockholm Film Festival 2013).

 

It is a project which has already gained some prizes and nominations (nominated to the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role, among others), with great producers behind (such as Brad Pitt himself) and directed by a 'novel' movie maker whose work is cheered (he won the People's Choice Award for Best Director in the last edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, and a special mention for Best Film in the Stockholm Film Festival 2013).

 

 

Intervienen en el film como protagonistas principales Chiwetel Ejiofor (ya visto en "American Gangster", o "Love Actually") -quien, según dicen las críticas y avalan los galardones y jurados, borda su papel- y Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: Primera Generación" o "Shame"), además de un largo elenco de grandes actores: el propio Pitt ("Inglorious Basterds", "Siete años en el Tibet" u "Ocean's Eleven") como Bass, para mí gran la "estrella"; Benedict Cumberbatch (protagonista de la televisiva "Sherlock"); Paul Giamatti ("Entre copas"); o la pequeña pero ya premiada por su talento Quvenzhané Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").

The cast of the film is leaded by Chiwetel Ejiofor (seen in "American Gangster", or "Love Actually") -who, as the critics declare and the prizes and juries support, plays a great role- and Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: First Class" or "Shame"), together with a large list of great actors: Brad Pitt ("Inglorious Basterds", "Seven Years in Tibet" or "Ocean's Eleven") as Bass, as per my understading the main "star"; Benedict Cumberbatch (playing "Shelock" in the so-called TV series); Paul Giamatti ("Sideways"); or the young but already prize-winner Quvenzhané Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") as Northup's daughter.
